Ivanti’s Nightmare Continues: Exploits Galore and Why Your Network Is Next

The saga of Ivanti Connect Secure and Policy Secure vulnerabilities just keeps getting worse, with multiple state-backed actors actively exploiting these flaws to breach corporate and government networks. If you’re running these appliances, you’re in a race against time to patch, or you’re likely already compromised.

The critical vulnerabilities include CVE-2023-46805 (authentication bypass), CVE-2024-21887 (command injection), CVE-2024-21888 (privilege escalation), and CVE-2024-21893 (server-side request forgery) [1]. These flaws, especially when chained, allow unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary commands, create backdoor accounts, and maintain persistent access [2]. Mandiant has attributed some exploitation to a China-nexus threat actor, UNC5221, while others are seeing broader, less sophisticated attacks [3]. Ivanti has released patches and external integrity checker tools, but exploitation began before patches were widely available.

This isn’t just another vulnerability; it’s a full-blown crisis for organizations using these VPN and NAC appliances. These devices are often edge-facing, providing direct access to internal networks. A compromise here means threat actors are inside your perimeter, often with administrative privileges, before you even know it. Developers and security teams need to prioritize patching immediately, run Ivanti’s integrity checker, and assume compromise if they haven’t been meticulously on top of this. Even if patched, forensic investigation is crucial, as backdoors could already be in place [4]. The ease of exploitation means even less sophisticated attackers are getting in.

Seriously, folks, if Ivanti is in your stack, drop everything and deal with this. This isn’t a “patch next week” situation; it’s a “patch yesterday” emergency. The attackers are already here, and they’re not waiting for your maintenance window. Lock it down!
