Ivanti Zero-Days: The Gift That Keeps On Giving (For Hackers)

Alright, folks, buckle up. The most critical story right now isn’t some shiny new AI or a cool web dev framework; it’s the persistent, insidious exploitation of Ivanti Connect Secure and Policy Secure vulnerabilities. These aren’t new vulnerabilities, but the ongoing threat and new attack vectors make them a constant headache, and a major win for threat actors.[1]

We’re talking about a chain of critical vulnerabilities, including CVE-2023-46805 (authentication bypass), CVE-2024-21887 (command injection), CVE-2024-21888 (privilege escalation), and CVE-2024-21893 (server-side request forgery). These flaws, when chained together, allow unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary commands on vulnerable devices. Multiple state-sponsored and financially motivated groups have been seen actively exploiting these since late last year, and the activity hasn’t slowed down.[2]

So, what’s the big deal? If your organization uses Ivanti Connect Secure or Policy Secure VPNs, you’re a prime target. These appliances often sit at the network perimeter, providing direct access to internal resources. A successful exploit means an attacker can bypass authentication, gain persistent access, deploy web shells, and move laterally across your network. We’re talking about a full-blown compromise, not just a minor breach. Patching isn’t enough; you need to assume compromise and perform forensic analysis and threat hunting, especially if you haven’t applied out-of-band updates immediately.[3]

This isn’t just about applying a patch and moving on. It’s a stark reminder that even enterprise-grade security solutions can become the weakest link. Keep your eyes peeled, patch aggressively, and for crying out loud, assume the worst when dealing with critical perimeter devices. Your network depends on it.
