The Ivanti Nightmare Keeps Giving: Why Your VPN is Still Under Siege

Despite numerous patches and vendor advisories, Ivanti Connect Secure and Policy Secure devices remain a hotbed for state-sponsored attacks, with threat actors continuously finding new ways to exploit them. This isn’t just about applying a patch; it’s about persistent compromise and a deep dive into your network’s integrity.

The saga began with the critical combination of CVE-2023-46805 (authentication bypass) and CVE-2024-21887 (command injection), allowing unauthenticated remote code execution (RCE)[1]. But the party didn’t stop there. More critical vulnerabilities quickly emerged, including CVE-2024-21888 (privilege escalation), CVE-2024-21893 (SSRF), and CVE-2024-22024 (XML external entity injection), all actively exploited in the wild[2]. Sophisticated groups like UNC5221 and Volt Typhoon aren’t just exploiting; they’re implanting persistent web shells and backdoors, turning remediation into a forensic nightmare[3].

So what? If your organization uses these Ivanti products, even if you’ve applied all the latest patches, you might still be compromised. These devices are often your gateway to the internal network, meaning attackers can bypass your perimeter defenses and move laterally with alarming ease. We’re talking about potential data exfiltration, ransomware deployment, and long-term espionage. This isn’t a “patch and forget” situation; it requires deep forensic analysis, threat hunting, and potentially rebuilding affected systems entirely[4]. Your perimeter just got a gaping hole.

Stop dragging your feet. Patch immediately if you haven’t, but more importantly, assume compromise. Hunt for persistence, scan your network for anomalous activity, and seriously consider accelerating your move to alternative, more secure access solutions. This is a critical wake-up call for network security teams everywhere.
