RCE Alert! Patch Your MSMQ Servers NOW or Face the Music!

Microsoft’s June Patch Tuesday just dropped, and it’s packing a serious punch. Among the dozens of fixes, one stands out: a critical Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability in Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ) that could let attackers seize your servers without breaking a sweat.

This nasty bug, identified as CVE-2024-30080 [1], boasts a CVSS score of 9.8. It allows an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable MSMQ server remotely by sending specially crafted malicious packets to TCP port 1801. No user interaction? No authentication? That’s the stuff of nightmares, folks.

If your organization uses MSMQ, this isn’t a “later” problem; it’s a “right now” problem. Unpatched systems are wide open to full system compromise, data breaches, and service disruption. Given the ease of exploitation and the critical impact, expect threat actors to weaponize this vulnerability quickly [2]. Developers need to flag this to their ops teams, and security teams need to prioritize patching MSMQ servers immediately across their infrastructure.

Don’t wait for the inevitable. Patching isn’t glamorous, but it’s your first and best line of defense. Get those updates deployed before the bad guys come knocking.
