Microsoft Pumps the Brakes on Recall: Security Overhaul Lands After Privacy Firestorm!

Microsoft is making significant changes to its controversial Recall feature for Copilot+ PCs, responding to a massive backlash over privacy and security vulnerabilities. This pivot aims to address fears that the AI-powered snapshot tool, which records everything you do on your PC, could be a goldmine for attackers.[1]

Originally, Recall was set to be enabled by default, storing unencrypted snapshots of user activity in a local SQLite database that security researchers quickly demonstrated could be trivially extracted. Concerns mounted about sensitive data—passwords, financial info, private conversations—being easily accessible to malware or local adversaries.[2]
